Micro Focus Help and the Infocenter

Overview

The Help for this Micro Focus product is viewable in a Web browser using the Infocenter application. You can view the Help either through the Infocenter on the Micro Focus Web site, or through a local Infocenter installed on your machine.

  • To view the Help on the Micro Focus site, use the URL http://supportline.microfocus.com/productdoc.aspx in your browser.
  • To view Help locally, you first install the Infocenter application and the required Java and Eclipse run-time support. You then download the Micro Focus Help and start the Infocenter. Then you can view the Help by entering: http://localhost:8081/help/index.jsp in your browser.

The following sections describe the steps you need to perform in order to install and use an Infocenter on your machine.

Prerequisite Software

The Infocenter is an Eclipse application and so it requires some Java and Eclipse run-time support, as well as the Infocenter application itself. You need the following software installed on your machine:

  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) - You can download JRE from http://java.com/. You need approximately 16MB of free disk space.
  • Eclipse Classic version 3.6.0 or later - You can get it from http://eclipse.org/downloads/. You need about 200MB of free disk space.
Important: If you are using a 64-bit machine, you must download and install a 64-bit version of Eclipse. Additionally, you need to add the path to JRE's bin directory (for example, C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\) to the PATH environment variable.

Install (unzip) Eclipse Classic into a directory that does not contain space characters, such as c:\Infocenter (we'll refer to this location as Install_Location). Usually, this creates an eclipse subfolder for the Eclipse installation in the Install_Location directory.

To Start the Infocenter

  1. At a command prompt navigate to where you installed the Infocenter.
  2. Start the Infocenter by entering the following command:
javaw -classpath eclipse\plugins\org.eclipse.help.base_version.jar org.eclipse.help.standalone.Infocenter -command start -eclipsehome Install_Location\eclipse -port 8081
    where:
    • version is the version of the available org.eclipse.help.base plugin - for example, org.eclipse.help.base_3.6.0.v201106131736.jar
    • Install_Location is the directory in which you installed Eclipse - for example, c:\Infocenter
  3. Display the Infocenter by pointing your browser to http://localhost:8081/help/index.jsp.

To Install the Micro Focus Help into the Infocenter

Each Help set is in a plugin, a file with the extension .jar. You add a Help plugin to the Infocenter by copying it into the Install_Location\eclipse\plugins folder. You then need to stop and restart the Infocenter.

  1. Download the Help from the Micro Focus site.
  2. Place the Micro Focus Help *.jar file in the Install_Location\eclipse\plugins directory.
  3. Stop and then restart Infocenter.
  4. Display the help by pointing your browser to http://localhost:8081/help/index.jsp.

To Stop the Infocenter

  1. At a command prompt navigate to where you installed the Infocenter.
  2. Stop the Infocenter by entering the following command:
javaw -classpath eclipse\plugins\org.eclipse.help.base_version.jar org.eclipse.help.standalone.Infocenter -eclipsehome Install_Location\eclipse -command shutdown
    where:
    • version is the version of the available org.eclipse.help.base plugin - for example, org.eclipse.help.base_3.6.0.v201106131736.jar
    • Install_Location is the directory in which you installed Eclipse - for example, c:\Infocenter
